Abstract

A PROCESS FOR PRODUCING AT LEAST ONE OLEFIN, SUCH AS ETHYLENE, FROM A HEAVY HYDROCARBON FEED, WHEREIN A COMBINED STREAM OF THE HEAVY HYDROCARBON FEED AND DILUTION STEAM IS FLASHED TO SEPARATE FROM THE HYDROCARBON FEED A VAPOR FRACTION AND A LIQUID FRACTION CONTAINING HEAVY ENDS. THE VAPOR FRACTION, ESSENTIALLY FREE OF HIGH-BOILING AND COKABLE COMPONENTS, IS THEN PASSED TO A PYROLYSIS, OR CRACKING FURNACE WHEREBY THE VAPOR FRACTION IS CRACKED TO PRODUCE DESIRED PRODUCTS, INCLUDING OLEFIN SUCH AS ETHYLENE. FLASHING OF THE HYDROCARBON FEED PRIOR TO CRACKING IN ORDER TO SEPARATE HIGH-BOILING COMPONENTS FROM THE FEED PREVENTS THE FORMATION OF COKE DEPOSITS IN THE PYROLYSIS OR CRACKING FURNACE.
