Abstract

Isoprene is polymerized in the presence of titanium tetrachloride and an etherate of an organo-aluminium compound but in the absence of free ether; the products have an essentially cis:1, 4 configuration. The organo-aluminium compound may have the formula A1 R1R2R3 wherein R1 is alkyl, aryl or aralkyl and R2 and R3 are alkyl, aryl, aralkyl or hydrogen, a large number being specified; the used of aluminium triethyl and triisobutyl are exemplified. The ether used to form the etherate may be dimethyl, diethyl, di-n-propyl, di-isopropyl, di-n-butyl, di-isobutyl, or diamyl ether. The mol ratio of aluminium to titanium can be 0,5 to 2 and the total amount of catalyst 0,5-5 parts per 100 parts by weight of isoprene. Inert diluents may be present, e.g. cyclohexane, heptane, hexane, pentane or benzene, or mass polymerization may be used, or isoprene vapour can be contacted with the catalyst.ALSO:A catalyst for polymerizing isoprene comprises titanium tetrachloride and an etherate of an organo-aluminium compound, free ether being absent. The organo-aluminium may have the formula Al R1 R2 R3 where R1 is alkyl, aryl or aralkyl and R2 and R3 are hydrogen, alkyl, aryl or aralkyl. A large number are specified and the uses of the triethyl and triisobutyl are exemplified. The ether may be dimethyl, diethyl, di-n- or -iso-propyl, di-n- or -iso-butyl or diamyl ether. The mol ratio of aluminium to titanium can be from 0.5 to 2.
