Abstract

2-Alkyl-1,3-butadienes, the alkyl group having 1 to 8 carbon atoms, are polymerized using a catalyst system comprising titanium tetrachloride and the phenyl and/or naphthyl etherates or an organo-aluminium compound <FORM:1004665/C3/1> wherein R1 is an alkyl (including cycloalkyl), aryl or aralkyl radical or a halogen or hydrogen atom and R2 and R3 are alkyl, aryl or aralkyl radicals, the aluminium to titanium mol. ratio varying from 0.8 : 1 to 1.2 : 1. In the examples: (1) isoprene is polymerized in pentane using aluminium triisobutyl diphenyl etherate and titanium tetrachloride; (2) isoprene is polymerized using the anisole etherate of triisobutyl aluminium; (3) 2-ethyl-1,3-butadiene is polymerized using aluminium triisobutyl diphenyl etherate and titanium tetrachloride. The poly mers may be vulcanized.
