Abstract

Butadiene is polymerized at a temperature between - 25 DEG C. and + 50 DEG C. using a catalyst formed from titanium tetrachloride and an organo aluminium compound of the formula <FORM:0824456/IV (a)/1> where R1 is phenyl, an alkyl substituted phenyl or a naphthyl radical, R2 a hydrogen atom, an alkyl radical with one or two carbon atoms, a phenyl or substituted phenyl radical or a naphthyl radical, m is 1 to 3, n is (3 - m), in a mol. ratio of at least 0.5 to 1, said catalyst being used in an amount of from 0.1 to 10% by weight with reference to the polymer. Specified organo-aluminium compounds include aluminium-tri-(2phenyl-ethyl), aluminium-tri-(2-phenyl-propyl), aluminium - tri - (2,2 - diphenyl - ethyl), aluminium di - (2 - phenyl - ethyl) - monochloride, aluminium - di - (2 - phenyl - propyl) - monochloride, aluminium - di - (2,2 - diphenyl - ethyl)-monochloride and aluminium - (2 - phenylpropyl)-dichloride. The polymerization may be carried out in the presence of an inert diluent, e.g. butane, pentane, hexane, cyclohexane, methyl cyclohexane and isopropylcyclohexane. In the examples, butadiene is polymerized in the presence of reaction products of titanium tetrachloride and (1) aluminium-tri-(2-phenylpropyl), (2) aluminium - di - (2 - phenylpropyl) - monochloride, and (3) aluminium - (2-phenyl - propyl) - dichloride. The products contain a high content of 1 : 4-trans-polybutadiene. Specifications 804,079 and 804,083 are referred to.
