Abstract

Styrene is polymerized with a catalyst prepared by bringing together a component A comprising the reaction product at 100-250 DEG C. of an aluminium trialkyl and a titanium tetrahalide in a molar ratio of from 3:5 to 1:5, and a component B comprising an aluminium trialkyl, the atomic ratio of aluminium in B to titanium in A being from 0,8:1 to 2:1. Specified catalyst components are AlEt3 and TiCl4, with Et2AlCl and Et2AlOEt being disclosed as optional ingredients. The polymerization may be in bulk or in a hydrocarbon diluent and if desired hydrogen may be present to reduce the intrinsic viscosity of the product. Ethanol, hydrochloric acid, water and steam are used in terminating the reaction and purifying the product and fractionation is effected with methyl ethyl ketone. The polymers obtained are of isotactic structure and may be formed into filaments and fibres. The Specification states that a substantial part of component A is assumed to be titanium trihalide.
