Abstract

Butadiene is polymerised, to give a polymer of at least 93% cis-structure, in the presence of a hydrocarbon solvent and a catalyst soluble therein, which catalyst is formed by reacting a dialkyl aluminium halide with a b -diketone derivative of a Group VIII metal, the concentration of the Group VIII metal compound in the solvent being not more than 2 millimoles per litre and the molar ratio of halide to diketone is at least 30. Specified Group VIII metal compounds are the acetylacetonates of divalent and trivalent cobalt, and of divalent nickel and cobalt and nickel acyl-acetonates, benzoyl-acetones, and benzoyl-acetophenones. Diethyl aluminium monochloride is the specified aluminium compound. Specified solvents are benzene, toluene, heptane, octane and cyclohexane.ALSO:In the polymerization of butadiene, to give a polymer of at least 93% cis-structure, in the presence of a hydrocarbon solvent, there is used a catalyst formed by reacting a dialkyl aluminium halide with a beta-diketone derivative of a Group VIII metal, the concentration of the Group VIII metal compound in the solvent being not more than 2 millimols per litre and the molar ratio of halide to diketone being at least 30. Specified Group VIII metal compounds are the acyl acetonates, especially acetylacetonates, of di- and tri-valent cobalt and of divalent nickel, and cobalt and nickel derivatives of benzoyl acetone and benzoyl acetoacetonate. Diethyl aluminium is the specified aluminium compound. Specified solvents are benzene, toluene, heptane, octane and cyclohexane.
