Abstract
A monomer (mixture) contg. at least 70 wt.% of a conjugated diene is (co) polymerised, at 5 to 100 degrees C in presence of a catalyst comprising (a) afree-radical anion component obtained in presence of an inert solvent by reaction of an alkali metal with an aromatic hydrocarbon, tetramethylenethane or ketyl; and (b) an alkali metal cpd. chosen from (1) an alkali metal alkoxide or aryl oxide with not more than 20C-atoms; (2) an alkali metal halide; (3) KOH; and (4) a potassium- sulphate,-phosphate,-sulphide,- cyanide, -carbonate or -carboxylate (up to 10C-atoms); the alkali metal cpd. being employed in ratio 0.5-4 mol per mol of anion component; and the catalyst being employed in proportion of 0.1-1 m mol per 100 pbw of monomer(s). The catalyst is especially suitable for polymerisation of butadiene.
