Abstract

Copolymers of butadiene and isoprene of molecular weight between 1000 and 20,000, and a viscosity of about 25 to 1000 centipoises at 50 DEG C. are made by copolymerizing the dienes in the presence of a catalyst comprising metallic lithium, or organolithium compounds, and which is present in an amount of 10 to 200 millimoles per mole of the dienes. The molecular weight of the product is regulated by adding acetylene and/or an allene to the dienes. The catalyst is used in the form of a solution or suspension in an inert diluent. The copolymerization may be effected in bulk, but the presence of a hydrocarbon diluent is preferred. Butyl and phenyl lithiums are the specified organo-metallic compounds. The copolymers are recovered by conventional techniques.
