Abstract

Polymers of conjugated dienes containing from 4 to 10 carbon atoms are polymerized by a continuous process in a polymerization zone, in the presence of a hydrocarbon diluent and a catalyst formed on mixing (a) an organo-metallic compound or a compound of the formula M1M11H4 where M1 is an alkali metal, and M11 is aluminium or boron, with (b) a metal halide, by mixing the catalyst components, diluent, and diene in a mixing zone for a period of less than one minute, and then introducing the mixture into the polymerization zone. The diene may be butadiene, isoprene, 2,3-dimethyl-1, 3-butadiene, 1,3-, or 2-methyl-1, 3-, or 2,3-dimethyl-1, 3-, or 3-methyl-1, 3-pentadiene, or 2-phenylbutadiene. The dienes may be copolymerized with other olefinically unsaturated compounds such as 1-olefins, non-conjugated dienes, acrylics, halogen-substituted olefins, vinyl-substituted aromatics, or vinyl-substituted pyridenes. The Specification contains a very extensive list of suitable catalysts. Exemplified catalysts are a mixture of triisobutylaluminium, titanium tetrachloride, and iodine. The Specification includes two flow diagrams of continuous processes for carrying the invention into effect, together with methods of recovery of solvent, and unreacted monomer.
