Abstract

1,053,003. Stereoregular polydienes. MINISTRY OF PETROLEUM & CHEMICAL INDUSTRY, RUMANIA. Feb. 5, 1965 [Feb. 5, 1964], No. 5191/65. Heading C3P. Stereoregular polydienes are produced by continuously feeding into a column reactor a homogeneous liquid mixture of diene monomer, inert hydrocarbon solvent, a polymerization catalyst comprising an aluminium alkyl halide and an organic nickel or cobalt chloride complex, and a minor proportion of methanol and water, polymerizing the monomer therein whilst maintaining the reactor cool, and withdrawing the polydiene product from the reactor. In the example butadiene is polymerized in benzene solution with a mixture of aluminium diethyl chloride and a complex of cobalt chloride with 2 - methyl - 5 - ethyl - pyridine as catalyst. The butadiene solution, catalyst, and the water/ methanol mixture are homogenized and continuously fed into a reactor to produce polybutadiene of 90% cis-1,4-structure.
