Abstract

1,213,411. Polymer hydrogenation using a soluble catalyst. BRIDGESTONE TIRE K.K. 12 July, 1968 [20 July, 19671, No. 34140/68. Heading C3P. In a process for the catalytic hydrogenation of a polymer a solution of the polymer is reacted with hydrogen in the presence of a soluble catalyst obtained by mixing (1) at least one organic compound of Ni, Co or Fe wherein each organic radical is attached to the metal through an oxygen atom with (2) at least one organometallic compound having the formula MR n wherein M=Li or Mg, R=C 1-20 alkyl and n=valency. The hydrogenation is preferably carried out in a viscous solution such as polymer solutions of viscosity 0À05 to 5000 poise and concentrations of 1 to 30 per cent by weight, and selective hydrogenation of olefinically unsaturated bonds may be effected under mild conditions of temperature, 0‹ to 120‹ C., and H 2 pressure, less than 10 atmospheres, although aromatic nuclei may be hydrogenated under more severe conditions. Suitable polymers are diene polymers and polymers used in the examples are polybutadiene and styrenebutadiene random copolymers. Solvents which may be used for dissolving the polymer include saturated hydrocarbons, aromatics and dilorinated aromatics, as well as ether.
