Abstract
1384143 Hydrogenated diene polymers INSTITUT FRANCAIS DU PETROLE DES CARBURANTS ET LUBRIFIANTS 30 June 1972 [5 July 1971] 30825/72 Heading C3P Hydrogenated conjugated diene polymers are prepared by a two-stage process comprising (1) polymerizing the diene in solution, in the absence of an organometallic reducing agent, and in the presence of a transition metal compound of formula where X is halogen, n is 0, 1, 2 or 3, M is a Group IV to VIII transition metal, R<SP>11</SP> is hydride, halogen, hydrooarbyl or carbonyl, m is 1-5, L is a Lewis base containing at least one ether, alcohol or ketone group, p is 0-4, and q is an integer; and (2) reacting the solution from step (1) containing residual catalyst, with hydrogen in the additional presence of a metallic reducing agent of formula R<SP>1</SP> m <SP>1</SP>M<SP>1</SP>X<SP>1</SP> n <SP>1</SP>, M<SP>1</SP>AlH p <SP>1</SP>X<SP>1</SP> 4-p <SP>1</SP> or R<SP>1</SP> q <SP>1</SP>M<SP>1</SP> in which R<SP>1</SP> is an aromatic, saturated aliphatic or saturated cycloaliphatic hydrocarbon radical or a combination thereof, having 1-20 carbon atoms, m<SP>1</SP> is 1-3, M<SP>1</SP> is Al, Zn, Li, Na or Mg, X<SP>1</SP> is halogen, R, OR, NR 2 , or NHR, where R is a monovalent hydrocarbon radical, n<SP>1</SP> is 0-2, p<SP>1</SP> is 0-4 and q<SP>1</SP>, which is equal to the valence of the metal M<SP>1</SP>, is 1-3. Prior to stage (2) the residual catalyst may be modified by adding a complexing agent for the transition metal, e.g. acetylacetone, a carboxylic acid or an amine such as pyridine. Under certain conditions the hydrogenation may be selective to 1,2-units. All the examples start from 1,3-butadiene in toluene or n-heptane solution, the catalyst for stage (1) being one of the following and the reducing agent added for stage (2) being triethylaluminium, butyl lithium or lithium aluminium hydride. In Example 4 further stage (1) catalyst is also added for stage (2).
