Abstract

Low-pressure olefin polymerization catalysts comprise a mixture of (a) an inorganic halide of Group IV, V, VI and VIIa; (b) an organo-metallic compound or hydride of a Group I, II or III metal, tin or lead or an organic boron compound or an addition complex thereof or a Group Ia, II or III metal, or an alloy thereof, and (e) nickel, cobalt, platinum, iridium or copper either as finely divided metal or as a compound thereof. It is preferred to use nickel especially as an organic co-ordination compound thereof. Specifications 799,392, 799,823, 801,031, 820,263 and 829,628 are referred to.ALSO:Olefins are polymerized by the low-pressure process using as catalysts a mixture of (a) an inorganic halide of Group IV, V, VI or VIIa; (b) an organo-metallic compound or hydride of a Group I, II or III metal, tin or lead, or an organic boron compound, or an addition complex thereof, or a Group Ia, II or III metal or an alloy thereof; and (c) nickel, cobalt, platinum, iridium or copper as finely divided metal or as a metal compound. Specified (c) components are Raney-nickel, nickel acetylacetonate, nickel dimethyl-glyoxime, nickel carbonyl, nickel chloride, biscyclopentadienyl nickel or nickel tetraphenylisonitrile. Specified olefins are ethylene, propylene, butylene and their mixtures. The polymerization may be carried out in the presence of a hydrocarbon solvent. Specifications 799,392, 799,823, 801,031, 820,263 and 829,628 are referred to.
