Abstract

Butadiene polymers having above 80% 1,2-addition are obtained by polymerizing in the presence of a catalyst formed by mixing molybdenum pentachloride with either a compound of the formula RnM in which each R is alkyl, aryl, cycloalkyl, aralkyl or alkaryl containing 1-10 carbon atoms and M is gallium, indium, lead, zinc or mercury (of valency n) or an ethereal solution of a compound M1M11H4 in which M1 is an alkali metal and M11 is aluminium or boron and the ether is a dialkyl ether in which each alkyl contains 1-4 carbon atoms or a saturated cyclic ether having a 5 or 6 membered ring containing not more than 2 oxygen atoms and a total of not more than 8 carbon atoms, e.g. dimethyl, diethyl, dipropyl, dibutyl, methyl ethyl, or ethyl butyl ether, dioxane or tetrahydrofuran. The mol. ratio of other component to molybdenum pentachloride may be 0,8-5:1 and the total catalyst may be 0,1-10% by weight of the butadiene. Polymerization is effected at 0 DEG -150 DEG C. in bulk or in a hydrocarbon diluent. The catalyst is destroyed and rubbery polymer precipitated by addition of an alcohol. In the examples p molybdenum pentachloride is used in combination with lithium aluminium hydride, triethyl gallium, lithium borohydride, tetraethyl lead, dibutyl zinc, di-n-butyl mercury, and tributyl indium. Specifications 848,065 and 848,067 are referred to.
