Abstract

A hypochlorite composition, comprising substantially anhydrous lithium hypochlorite, is prepared by drying a solution or a hydrate of lithium hypochlorite, at a temperature within the range of 20-60 DEG C, under an absolute pressure not in excess of one-tenth the vapour pressure of water at the temperature employed. The composition may contain up to 30 per cent. of water based on the weight of lithium hypochlorite present and contain not less than 100 per cent. of available chlorine. The Specification also discloses the production of LiOCl by chlorinating a lithium hydroxide solution or suspension and separating the LiOCl from the lithium chloride by treatment with an aliphatic alcohol to form a hypochlorite compound which is readily separable from the LiCl, and subsequently treating the hypochlorite compound with LiOH to obtain LiOCl.
