Abstract

5 : 7 - Dichloro - 8 - hydroxyquinaldine, which has bactericidal properties, is manufactured by reacting 4 : 6-dichloro-2-aminophenol with acetaldehyde, paraldehyde, aldol, acetal, crotonaldehyde or lactic acid in the presence of a strong acid, e.g. hydrochloric or sulphuric acid and preferably with the addition of zinc, tin or aluminium or a salt thereof with a strong acid, e.g. zinc chloride, tin tetrachloride or aluminium chloride; or by treating 4-chloro-2-aminophenol similarly to produce 5-chloro-8-hydroxyquinaldine and chlorinating this in acid solution. In an example, 4 : 6-dichloro-2-aminophenol is allowed to stand, or heated under reflux, with paraldehyde, hydrochloric acid and aluminium chloride. A sample has been furnished under Sect. 2(5) of 5 : 7-dichloro-8-hydroxyquinaldine prepared by treating 4-chloro-2-aminophenol as in the example above, and treating the resulting 5-chloro-8-hydroxyquinaldine with chlorine in hydrochloric acid at 40-55 DEG C.
