Abstract
Quaternary phosphonium compounds are obtained by reacting phosphine with a lower aliphatic aldehyde containing 1 to 3 carbon atoms and an acid in the presence of a small proportion by weight of a heavy metal or a water-soluble salt thereof. Suitable heavy metals or salts thereof are mercury either in the form of the metal or as chloride, ferric chloride, silver nitrate, silver sulphate, copper sulphate, stannic chloride and platinic chloride. Two or more different heavy metals or water-soluble salts thereof may be used simultaneously. Examples are given for the production of tetra-(hydroxy-methyl)-phosphoniumchloride, -fluoride, -acetate, -oxalate, and -lactate, the acid used being hydrochloric, hydrophoric, acetic, oxalic and lactic respectively. Reference is also made to the use of formic, sulphuric and p-toluene sulphonic acid respectively to give the corresponding tetra (hydroxymethyl) phosphonium salts. Examples are also given for the production of tetrahydroxy ethyl-and tetra-hydroxypropyl phosphonium chlorides using acetaldehyde and propionaldehyde respectively as the aldehyde. The products are useful as flame proofing agents for textiles.
