Abstract

A brightener solution for addition to a cyanide silver electroplating bath (see Group XXXVI) is formed by heating to boiling an aqueous mixture of 1 to 4 parts alkali metal hydroxide, 1 part of a compound of antimony or bismuth, and 1 to 6 parts of a straight chain polyhydroxy aliphatic compound in which hydroxy groups are attached to adjacent carbon atoms, the parts being by weight. Preferably the polyhydroxy compound contains from 2 to 6 carbon atoms and has as many hydroxy groups as carbon atoms. Specific examples are given of complexes formed from glycerol, arsenic trioxide or pentoxide or bismuth hydroxide, and sodium or potassium hydroxide.
