Abstract

Formaldehyde is produced by the oxidation of methane using oxides of nitrogen as catalyst by passing methane mixed with air and/or oxygen and with the catalyst through a heated reaction zone maintained at a pressure below atmospheric, and then separating formaldehyde from the gases leaving the reaction zone. The pressure may be between 0.05 and 0.9 atmospheres. A 38-40 per cent solution of formaldehyde in water may be obtained by scrubbing the gases leaving the reaction zone with water either at the reaction pressure or at atmospheric pressure. Paraformaldehyde can be obtained directly by chilling the product gases to, for example, 0 DEG C. In the examples mixtures of methane, oxygen and oxides of nitrogen are passed into a heated reaction zone at various temperatures and at various pressures below atmospheric pressure to give formaldehyde.
