Abstract
4,5-Dihydrouracil is produced by reacting acrylic acid with urea in sulphuric acid as solvent, at a temperature between 100 DEG and 250 DEG C., diluting the reaction mixture with water and separating the 4,5-dihydrouracil. The sulphuric acid may be of 90 to 100% concentration by weight and the ratio by weight of sulphuric acid to urea is between 2: 1 and 1: 1. The ratio by weight of acrylic acid and urea may be between 0.2: 1 and 1: 1. Air is preferably excluded from the reaction which is carried out at a pressure of 0.5 to 10 atmospheres gauge, either by the intrinsic reaction pressure or by using inert gases, e.g. nitrogen or nitrogen monoxide.
