Abstract
Rubber degradation products are obtained by acting upon a solution of rubber with chlorine dioxide, which may be in gaseous form dissolved in a solvent or produced in situ by the action of a strong mineral acid on sodium or potassium chlorite. The solvent for the rubber and chlorine dioxide may be benzene, toluene, xylene, carbon tetrachloride, dichlorethylene, trichlorethylene, and cyclohexane. The degradation products may be further treated with hydrogen chloride to form rubber hydrochloride, or with sulphurous or sulphuric acid. If gaseous chlorine dioxide is used it may be diluted with nitrogen or carbon dioxide. The reaction is preferably carried out at air temperature, or at a temperature not exceeding 60 DEG C.
