Abstract
Sulphur containing a high proportion of the carbon disulphide-insoluble Sm form is produced by quenching sulphur vapour in a stream of water to a temperature of not more than 90 DEG C. Preferably, the sulphur vapour is diluted with an inert gas such as nitrogen, carbon dioxide or carbon monoxide, and the quenching water is sprayed into the sulphur vapour by atomizing with inert gas. A plastic sheet of sulphur free from sulphur dioxide is obtained which is freed from water by intensive rolling. The sulphur loses its plasticity after storing for some days and may then be ground. The proportion of Sm in the product depends on the temperature from which the sulphur vapour is quenched, for example, 69.4 per cent. of Sm is produced by quenching sulphur vapour at a temperature of 1,100 DEG C., and 36 per cent. of Sm at a temperature of 450 DEG C.ALSO:Formation of surface bloom on rubber is prevented by vulcanizing with sulphur containing two parts of Sm (carbon disulphide-insoluble sulphur) to each part of Slambda. Such a product may be produced by quenching sulphur vapour in a stream of water to a temperature of not more than 90 DEG C. The proportion of Sm in the product depends on the temperature from which the sulphur vapour is quenched.
