Steel containing less than 0.003 per cent N is obtained by blowing up to the end of the dephosphorizing stage with nitrogen-free oxygen and steam or carbon dioxide and then, immediately afterwards with substantially nitrogen-free argon or a substantially nitrogen-free mixture of argon and oxygen.
