Abstract
A process for the manufacture of steel having 0.003 to 0.01 per cent. nitrogen in an acid converter from an iron containing more than 0.2 per cent. silicon, or in a basic converter from an iron containing more than 0.6 per cent. phosphorus, comprises blowing the iron with a mixture of steam and an oxygen-containing gas composed essentially of oxygen and nitrogen, the steam content of the mixture being between 14.3 per cent. and 66.66 per cent. and the oxygen-containing gas having an oxygen content of 50-94 per cent. In the acid process the blowing may commence with air or oxygen-enriched air and change to the steam-oxygen-nitrogen mixture in the middle of the decarburization, and in the basic process the change may be made at the beginning of the dephosphorization. The mixture may, however, be used throughout the whole blow.
