Abstract
In a process for refining phosphorus rich crude cast iron to transform it into steel, a suspension of oxygen- and powdered lime is blown into the melt via a multiple orifice lance; 80% of the lime necessary is blown into the melt during the first five minutes, then pure O2 is blown until 70% of the blow time has passed and finally the remaining 20% of lime is blown in. The process uses lime normally used in steel prodn. to form a single slag without the need for special measuring appts. The steel produced has a final P content of 0.03%.
