Abstract
A method of manufacturing steel in a bottom blown converter comprises injecting a finely divided dephosphorizing agent carried by an oxidizing gas or gaseous mixture commercially free from nitrogen through the bottom of the converter. The gas may be a mixture of carbon dioxide and oxygen or oxygen and steam, the steam preferably being superheated, and the dephosphorizing agent may be lime or any other basic oxide or carbonate or a mixture thereof and may contain fluorspar or iron or manganese oxide as flux or may be a preformed slag. The melt may be blown with gas only, then with gas and dephosphorizing agent part of which may be added in bulk before commencing the blow. The process may be carried out in one converter or in two different converters.
