Abstract

The carbon content of chromium bearing steels is lowered by treating the steels in the molten state with oxygen, a rare gas also being introduced, at least from the point when the chromium would otherwise preferentially oxidize, the oxygen to rare gas ratio being maintained between 1:1 and 1:8.
