Abstract
Nitrosyl compounds are removed from sulphuric acid by adding thereto at least one equivalent of formaldehyde with respect to the nitrogen oxides present. The acid, which may have a strength exceeding 70%, may be treated at 15 DEG -95 DEG C. temperature with or without stirring. The formaldehyde may be used as such, or may be added as an aqueous solution thereof, or as paraformaldehyde, or another compound which liberates formaldehyde under the reaction conditions, e.g. tri- or tetra-, oxymethylene, or aldehydeaddition compounds. Excess formaldehyde and NO formed are removed by blowing in air or inert gas.
