Abstract
In the production of chlorine dioxide by reacting chlorine with an aqueous solution of a water-soluble chlorite and recovering the product in a current of inert gas, the chlorine and inert gas are separately and concurrently injected into the solution whereby a product free from chlorine is obtained. Preferably the inert gas is supplied at a point above the point of introduction of the chlorine, but when air is used, this may be introduced below the chlorine. The proportion of air used is such that explosive mixtures are avoided. The gases may be introduced in finely dispersed condition, and intimate contact with the solution be ensured by having packing members therein. The reaction may take place in a lined tower or series of towers. Specification 456,569 and U.S.A. Specification 2,131,447 are referred to.
