Abstract

501,133. Batteries. I. G. FARBENINDUSTRIE AKT.-GES. Aug. 20, 1937, No. 22934. Convention date, Nov. 6, 1936. [Class 53] [Also in Group III] The depolarizing properties of hydrated pyrolusite obtained by subjecting the mineral to a treatment with an alkaline aqueous solution of an alkali metal or ammonium compound such as hydrate, carbonate, or bicarbonate are improved by treatment with an aqueous solution of a chlorate or chromate, preferably at an elevated temperature, and if desired, also under pressure. In an example, hydrated pyrolusite is boiled in a sodium chlorate solution, and then washed and dried. The hydrated pyrolusite may first be treated by either of the processes described in Specification 500,806, if desired. The Specification, as open to inspection under Sect. 91, comprises also the following subject matter : Hydrated manganese dioxide of any origin may be treated by the process of the invention; and treatment may be effected with any salt adapted to yield oxygen, used preferably in the form of an aqueous solution. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
