Abstract

524,171. Beryllium compounds. I. G. FARBENINDUSTRIE AKT-GES. Jan. 23, 1939, No. 2356. Convention date, April 5, 1938. [Class 1 (iii)] Beryllium hydroxide together with an insoluble fluoride is precipitated from solutions containing beryllium in the form of fluorine compounds by treating the solution with caustic alkali or ammonia in the presence of an electrolyte such as calcium chloride or magnesium chloride or sulphate adapted to form an insoluble fluoride. Beryllium compounds free of fluorine may be obtained from the mixed precipitate either by treating the latter with caustic alkali or with an alkali metal or ammonium carbonate, or by converting the beryllium present into chloride which is volatilized. In the latter case the mixed precipitate may be calcined to obtain beryllium oxide, and the product be treated with chlorine in the presence of carbon at elevated temperature.
