Abstract
In the production of sodium chlorite by reaction between chlorine dioxide and sodium hydroxide solution, the chlorate ion produced is removed from the reaction mixture as potassium chlorate. This may be effected by treating a mixed solution of sodium and potassium hydroxides, or by adding potassium hydroxide after the reaction with sodium hydroxide. In the second process, the precipitated potassium chlorate is removed and the resulting solution of sodium chlorite and hydroxide further treated with chlorine dioxide, the process being continued until the solution contains only a small amount of sodium chlorate; the latter is decomposed by the addition of potassium chloride and the potassium chlorate formed is separated. The precipitation of potassium chlorate may be assisted by evaporation in vacuo.
