Abstract
Sulphuric acid, hydrochloric acid and sodium chloride are prepared simultaneously by contacting sodium sulphate and/or bisulphate with chlorine and sulphur dioxide in the presence of water. Solutions of the salts, e.g. spent solutions from viscose spinning or casting processes, or hydrated or partially or completely dehydrated salts may be used as the starting material. Water or crude sulphuric acid from a previous batch may be added to the starting material in such quantity that a part thereof remains undissolved. In a modification, sulphur may be used instead of sulphur dioxide. The sodium chloride obtained may be fed to an electrolysis plant and chlorine produced used for treating the sodium sulphate and/or bisulphate.
