Abstract

Gypseous zinc precipitates resulting from the treatment of zinc liquors containing sulphate, with lime, are freed substantially from their sulphur content by heating and stirring the precipitate suspended in a solution containing zinc chloride and sodium or calcium chloride, and calcining the resulting basic zinc sulphate after washing with water to free it from calcium chloride &c. The zinc chloride should be approximately equivalent to the sulphate present, and may be added from external sources, or may be prepared in situ by means of the sodium or calcium chloride. Alternatively the process may be carried out during the precipitation of the gypseous zinc hydrate. Dilute milk of lime is slowly added to the zinc liquor heated for example to about 70 DEG C., to which has been added sodium or calcium chloride. If the liquor has a high sulphate content it may be reduced prior to the above treatment by adding sodium chloride and crystallizing out the resulting Glauber's salt. High concentration of zinc and of neutral salts such as sodium and calcium chlorides facilitate the formation of the basic sulphate.
