Abstract

523,607. Bromine ; hydrobromic acid. TENNANT, W. J. (Dow Chemical Co.). Jan. 9, 1939, No. 666. [Classes 1 (ii) and 90] In a process for the extraction of bromine from sea-water and other solutions particularly those containing bromine in very small quantities free bromine is released from the bromides present by chlorination or electrolysis and is blown out by an air current from which bromine is absorbed by scrubbing in a tower with sulphur dioxide solution. This produces hydrobromic acid by the reaction Br 2 +SO 2 +2H 2 O# H 2 SO 4 +2HBr. Free bromine is released from this by chlorination and recovered by steam distillation. A flow diagram is given of a continuous process.
