Abstract
Flue gases and similar gases are freed from SO2 by washing with an aqueous solution containing 40 to 80% H2SO4, persulphuric acid and hydrogen peroxide, all or part of which is then regenerated in the anode compartment of an electrolytic cell, and then re-cycled to the washing stage. The absorbed SO2 is converted to SO3 in the washing stage, and in the electrolytic cell, is further oxidized to persulphuric acid where also H2O2 is formed. Flue gas admitted through a pipe 12 flows upwards from nozzles 13 against descending streams of the aqueous washing liquid passing through a conduit 15, and the cleaned gas is vented at 14. Washing liquid now containing SO3, is withdrawn through a pipe 18, and a part is recycled through a pipe 19a. The remainder is pumped through a cooling tank 21 to the anode compartment of an electrolytic cell, where oxidation is assisted by the presence of halogen ions, e.g. HCl. The regenerated washing liquor is pumped to the inlet 15. As the <PICT:0930584/III/1> H2SO4 content rises during the washing process, a part of the liquor is withdrawn through a pipe 30, and the equivalent amount of water is added through an inlet 37.
