Abstract

Mercury for use as cathode in the electrolysis of sodium sulphate solution is freed from metallic impurities by passing it in a fine rain through a column containing diluted nitric acid, by distillation or by agitation in the presence of sodium cyanide and sodium peroxide. In the electrolysis process anodes of lead alloyed with 12-15 per cent of antimony are used.
