Abstract

Acrylonitrile is hydro-dimerized to form adiponitrile, by treatment with nascent hydrogen, and in the presence of a compound of V, Ti, Fe, Ni, Cu, or Mn; which suppresses the formation of propionitrile. Ti and V chlorides are preferred. The nascent hydrogen may be generated by electrolysis or by the alkali or alkaline earth metal amalgam process at 20 DEG to 40 DEG C. Cooling coils are used. The reaction product is distilled in steam, the distillate saturated with K2Co3, and the oily layer formed is fractionated. Some adiponitrile is also extracted from the involatile residue by extraction with a solvent giving a total conversion of 50 to 70%.ALSO:Acrylonitrile is hydro-dimerized to form adiponitrile, by treatment in an acid solution with nascent hydrogen, and in the presence of a compound of V, Ti, Fe, Ni, Cu, or Mn, which suppresses the formation of propionitrile. Ti and V chlorides are preferred. The hydrogen may be generated by electrolysis or by the alkali or alkaline earth metal amalgam process. In an apparatus, a mercury cathode M is supported on a membrane B e.g. glass cloth, which is interposed between an aqueous solution of alkali or alkaline earth metal hydroxide or salt containing <PICT:1067447/C6-C7/1> the anode, and an acid solution of acrylonitrile and the metal salt. The inner vessel A contains the acid (HCl, H2SO4, H3PO4), acrylonitrile and Ti or V chloride, and the outer vessel J contains alkali metal hydroxide and the anode L, the two solutions being separated by the permeable membrane B resting on a non-metallic gauze H. The process is effected at 20 DEG to 40 DEG C., and at a current density of up to 0.5 A.S.Cm. The reaction product is distilled in steam, the distellate saturated with K2Co3 and the oily layer formed of adiponitrile fractionated. Some is also extracted from the involatile residue by extraction with a solvent, giving a total conversion of 50 to 70 per cent.
