Abstract

The invention comprises compounds of the formula <FORM:0822871/IV (a)/1> wherein X is an oxygen or sulphur atom, a carbonyl group or a straight or branched saturated or unsaturated alkylene radical of 1-5 carbon atoms and their preparation either by treating the corresponding bis sulphonyl halide with ammonia, an ammonium salt, e.g. ammonium carbonate or bicarbonate, or a compound which splits off ammonia, e.g. hexamethylene tetramine, preferably in aqueous, alcoholic or aqueous-alcoholic solution, or by treating a pyridyl sulphonamide of the formula <FORM:0822871/IV (a)/2> in which R is a halogen atom with an alkalimetal sulphide or with a hydroxy- or mercaptopyridine sulphonamide to give compounds wherein X = O or S, or treating a compound of the above formula wherein R is halo-alkyl radical of 1 or 2 carbon atoms with an alkalimetal to give a compound wherein X is an alkylene radical of 2 or 4 carbon atoms, or treating a compound wherein R is a carboxy-halide group or a halo-acyl radical of 1-5 carbon atoms with a similar compound wherein R is hydrogen to give a product in which X is a -CO- bridge or an alkylene radical. Examples describe the preparation of 2 : 21-dipyridyl sulphide-5 : 51-disulphonamide. 2 : 21 - Dipyridylsulphide - 5 : 51 - disulphonyl chloride is made by diazotizing 5 : 51-diamino-2 : 21-dipyridyl sulphide and treating the product with sulphur dioxide and cuprous chloride in acetic acid.
