Abstract
The process of Specification 880,952 is applied to the preparation of a ,b -unsaturated nitriles by the dehydration of b -hydroxycarboxylic acid nitriles by atomising these with a hydrous inorganic acid. The acid may be phosphoric, which may be diluted with water, and the molar ratio of acid to hydroxynitrile may be from about 1 : 3 to about 1 : 9. Temperatures of about 500 to 800 DEG C. may be used with residence times of about 1 to 2 seconds. In examples acrylonitrile is prepared from b -hydroxypropionitrile.
