Abstract

Tobias Acid is obtained by reacting a water-soluble salt of 2- hydroxy-1-naphthalenesulfonic acid, a source of ammonia and a source of sulphur dioxide in an autogenous pressure reactor, extracting the reaction mixture with a water-immiscible organic solvent to remove 2- aminonaphthalene therefrom, and acidifying the extracted aqueous product at a pH of about 1.8-2.5 and at a temperature of about 20-80 DEG C to obtain Tobias Acid with a low content of 2-aminonaphthalene.
