Ce procédé est du type selon lequel on fait réagir une solution aqueuse d'un sel d'acide 2-hydroxy-1-naphtalènesulfonique avec de l'ammoniaque et de l'anhydride sulfureux, extrait le mélange réactionnel à l'aide d'un solvant organique non miscible à l'eau en obtenant deux phases et acidifie la phase aqueuse pour obtenir une suspension contenant de l'acide 2amino-1-naphtalènesulfonique (acide de Tobias). Selon l'invention cette acidification est effectuée à un pH de 1,8 à 2,5 en maintenant la température de la suspension résultante à 2080 degrés C.
