Abstract

A process for the preparing Tobias Acid (2-amino-1-naphthalene- sulfonic acid) from beta-naphthol is disclosed in which an intermediate reaction mixture containing Armstrong Acid (2-hydroxy-1-naphthalenesulfonic acid) is transferred to a holding vessel at about 0 DEG -10 DEG C. for about 5-60 minutes prior to carrying out the amination reaction which converts the Armstrong Acid to Tobias Acid, and in which also, later in the process after amination and extraction of the reaction mixture with a water-immiscible organic solvent, an extracted aqueous phase of alkali metal and ammonium salts of Tobias Acid is acidified to pH about 1.8-2.5 at about 20 DEG -80 DEG C. to form a slurry from which Tobias Acid can be recovered by cooling to about 20 to 45 DEG C.
