Abstract

Tobias Acid is obtained by reacting separate streams of a solution of beta-naphthol in a water- immiscible solvent and chlorosulfonic acid at 0-5 DEG C. at a mole ratio of chlorosulfonic acid to beta- naphthol of about 0.85 to 1.15 for a time of 1-120 minutes and in a later stage after amination and extraction of the reaction mixture with a water-immiscible organic solvent, acidifying the extracted aqueous phase of alkali metal and ammonium salts of Tobias Acid at pH 1.8 to 2.5 at 20-80 DEG C. to form a slurry of Tobias Acid.
