Abstract
Carbon dioxide, sodium sulphate and calcium carbonate are prepared by making a dry mixture of sodium bicarbonate and calcium sulphate and adding water to initiate the reaction. The reaction is preferably effected in a closed vessel to which the mixture of solid ingredients is added, followed by sufficient water to render the mixture liquid or semi-liquid and stirrable. After the evolution of gas consequent upon the addition of water has begun to slacken, heat may be applied for example by steam pipes, to raise the reaction temperature to 80 DEG C. The contents of the reactor are then drawn off, the calcium carbonate settled and worked, and the sodium sulphate solution crystallized.
