Abstract

PURPOSE: To prepare methyl bromide continuously by the reaction of S, bromine and methanol, using a somewhat excess amount of methanol thereby making the reaction mixture homogeneous, raising the reaction temp. under normal pressure and increasing the reaction rate.
CONSTITUTION: Methyl bromide is prepared continuously by the reaction of S, bromine and methanol, where the molar ratio of CH3OH/Br2 is ≥2.2, and that of Br2/S is ≥3.1. The reaction temp. can be maintained at 70W85°C under normal pressure, and the reaction can proceed at a sufficiently high rate without forming S or intermediates of S compounds, e.g. thio acid. Concentration of H2SO4 during the reaction should be maintained 55W65wt%, since the dehydration of methanol occurs at higher H2SO4 concentration. For this purpose, H2O should be supplied in a molar ratio of H2O/S of 0.92W2.5, and the molar ratio of CH3OH/Br2 should be kept within 2.7W3.0
