Abstract
A process for making sulfuric acid, which includes the steps of: (I) passing from a reactor, in which it is formed, a gaseous mixture comprising sulfur dioxide and oxygen by at least three catalytic stages, in each of the which sulfur dioxide and oxygen react to form sulfur trioxide, the gas mixture being cooled after each stage, (II) absorbing the sulfur trioxide from the gas mixture after it has passed through the catalytic steps so that sulfuric acid is formed ; (III) bringing together a major portion of the unabsorbed gas from step (II) with the gaseous mixture to be passed through the catalytic steps, and (IV) purging from the process a secondary portion of the unabsorbed gas from the stage (II) ), characterized in that a gas containing oxygen in a proportion of at least 40% by volume of oxygen is added to the gas mixture, immediately upstream of, or in, selected catalytic steps, so that sulfur trioxide becomes a chosen portion of the sulfur dioxide in each selected stage.
