Abstract

Suberic acid is prepared by oxidizing cyclooctane with a mixture of monomeric and dimeric nitrogen dioxide. A catalyst comprising a vanadium compound, e.g. ammonium or sodium metavanadate and vanadin anhydride, may be used. The acid crystallises from the product and may be separated.
