Abstract

The halogenation of perylene is effected in the presence of a solvent, such as nitrobenzene, the halogen being employed in statu nascendi. According to the examples, 3 : 9-dichloro-, 3 : 4 : 9 : -10-tetrachloro-, and hexachloro-perylene are prepared by running an acetic acid solution of hydrogen peroxide into a solution of perylene in nitrobenzene at the same time as an acetic acid solution of concentrated hydrochloric acid is being added. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) describes also the halogenation of "other highly-condensed compounds" and includes an example of the chlorination of isoviolanthrone to the dichloro compound. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
