Abstract

Thioindigoid dyes dyeing cotton in fast brown shades from the hydrosulphite vat are prepared by condensing 2 : 1-naphthooxythiophene, or a nuclear substitution product thereof such as a halogen derivative, with isatin, or a substituted isatin such as a 5 : 7-dihalogen isatin, or a cyclic o-diketone containing two or more nuclei, for example acenaphthenequinone, 1 : 2-diketohydrindene, 2 : 3-diketo-(1)-thionaphthene; b -naphthisatin is however excluded. In an example, 5 : 7-dichlorisatin is used, the condensation being effected in the presence of glacial acetic acid.
